Athletic Placement Process
NYS requires students in 7th and 8th grade to go through the Athletic Placement Process for Inter-school Athletic Programs in order to participate in Freshman, Junior Varsity, and Varsity sports.
The Athletic Placement Process (APP) is a testing procedure to ensure that 7th and 8th-grade students who want to try out for a Freshman, JV or Varsity sport are at the physical, emotional, and academic maturity level required of higher-level competition. This process is meant for exceptional athletes who require a more competitive level for their growth as a student-athlete. In order for a student to make a high school team as a middle schooler, they must be seen as a potential starter or significant contributor of 50% or more playing time at that level. Their academic and emotional readiness is a significant factor in this process as well. To begin the Athletic Placement Process (APP) for your child (7th or 8th grade) to play a Freshman, JV or Varsity sport we require a recommendation from the Coach of the program. Once the Athletic Office receives the coach's recommendation, the following steps must be completed and approved prior to any tryouts being conducted.
The Process:
- Coach Recommendation - The Coach will complete a written recommendation for the student athlete to proceed with the Athletic Placement Process. They may request an opportunity to observe the student athlete completing sport specific skills prior to this recommendation.
- Parent/Guardian Permission -Parent Permission Form must be completed and filed with the Athletic Office. You will receive a request for this to be completed from the athletic secretary.
- Once parent permission is obtained the Athletic Office forwards the student’s name, along with the corresponding sport and level, to the Middle School nurse.
- Medical Clearance - This is determined by the district Nurse Practitioner. This is required before the student-athlete is allowed to take the fitness test. The Athletic office will reach out directly to family to schedule a physical time on specified dates by season.
- Administrative approval- The Director of Health, Physical Education, and Athletics will seek approval from middle school administrators and counseling staff regarding the student-athletes emotional and academic readiness.
- Physical Fitness Test - Student - Athletes must pass 4 out of the 5 required tests. You can view the chart by clicking here. *This is not required for Bowling & Golf*
- Qualification Determination is made by the Director of Health, Physical Education, and Athletics - if a student-athlete qualifies they may try out.
- Tryout for Sport - if they are determined eligible. If all steps have been completed and approved, your child will have the opportunity to try out for a Freshman, JV or Varsity sport. Students that are not selected to participate in the Freshman, JV or V level are eligible to participate in our modified sports program
Mixed Competition in Athletics:
Mixed competition is a term that the New York State Department of Education uses to define student participation in a sport of predominantly a different gender. It is the Department’s expectation that all students have the same requirements when trying out for or participating in an interschool athletic team.
The following are the requirements for any student to try out for an interscholastic athletic team:
- Signed parent/guardian consent- Parent Permission Form
- A current health examination
- A completed and signed Interval Health History Form stating that the health examination was not completed within 30 days of the start of the season; and
- Clearance from the director of school services for the student to participate in athletics.
