Water Testing
May 5, 2025
This is a follow-up to our March 4, 2025 letter about testing for lead levels in every water outlet in our district being used, or potentially used, for drinking or cooking. School districts are required to do this every three years, and ongoing lab testing is part of our commitment to safety. As new results become available, we will share updates promptly and post all findings at westirondequoit.org. Links to the documents can be found below.

Remedial Action Plan
Initial testing was done in late December 2024. Round 2 was done on April 22, 2025 and focused on cleaning the outlet's aerator and flushing. If any water outlet has levels above 5 parts per billion (ppb), which is equal to 5 micrograms per liter, the NYSDOH requires that schools take action.
In December 2024, 53 of 387 fixtures were above “action level.” As of April 22, 2025, 44 still need remediation. What's next for us? The district is intensifying its lead remediation strategy by employing a range of corrective actions, including but not limited to the installation of filtration systems and the replacement of impacted outlets and plumbing infrastructure, to uphold water safety standards.

NYS Department of Health requires school districts to conduct Lead Testing in School Drinking Water. Initial tests were conducted during the week of Dec. 23 and Dec. 27 of 2024. A total of 387 fixtures were tested in every building and 53 were above “action level.” Please refer to the PDF below (WICSD Remedial Action Plan) for room location, date, lab results and remedial actions. Sampling rounds were conducted by the WICSD on Dec. 23 and Dec. 27, 2024.
To protect public health, the Public Health Law and New York State Health Department (NYSDOH) regulations require that at all public schools and Boards of Cooperation Educational Services (BOCES) test lead levels in every water outlet that is being used or could potentially be used for drinking or cooking. If lead is found at any water outlet about five parts per billion (ppb), the NYSDOH requires that the school take action to reduce the exposure to lead. In December 2022, the Public Health Law was revised, reducing the threshold from 15 ppb to 5 ppb.
Please refer to more resources below, including a PDF with a room-by-room breakdown.
