Mrs. Kaitlin Groat was appointed Assistant Principal for Listwood and Southlawn schools (K-3) by the West Irondequoit Board of Education at Thursday’s meeting. She is scheduled to start in her new role, working alongside Principal Jake Shirley, on July 7th, 2025. Mrs. Groat has worked in the East Irondequoit CSD since 2014.

“We’re beyond excited to welcome Mrs. Groat as our new Assistant Principal,” said Dr. Aaron Johnson, Superintendent of Schools. “She’s a dynamic educator with sharp instructional skills, a true gift for connecting with people, a heart for support, and a can-do spirit that lights up every room. Our district is lucky to welcome her as our newest leader!”

For the past three years, Mrs. Groat has been a Teacher on Special Assignment as a Student Success Coach at the Helendale Primary School (Pre-K through second grade). She supports the school community in addressing building culture, climate and safety and supports instructional, behavioral and social-emotional goals for students.

At the district level, she was an Extended School Year Administrator in 2023, responsible for ensuring that students with special needs received educational support during the summer. She was an Administrative Intern during the 2021-22 school year at Durand Eastman Intermedia and from 2018-2022 an AVID Program Building Coordinator at East Irondequoit Middle School. She started her career at EIMS as a mathematics teacher, serving in that role for eight years.

Mrs. Groat has earned Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in mathematics from SUNY Geneseo and the University of Rochester’s Warner School of Education, respectively. A Penfield High School graduate who goes by “Katie,” she and her husband, Alex, reside in Penfield. They enjoy traveling, trying new restaurants and love spending time with their dog, Rosie.
