Posted on 04/27/2022

Irondequoit High School senior Candace Tytler and IHS boys varsity basketball coach Chris Cardon will each receive awards from the prestigious Rochester Press-Radio Club at its annual Celebration of Champions on June 1 at Frontier Field.

Candace has been named the Female High School Athlete of Year for her running exploits in cross country and track and field, and Mr. Cardon will receive the Charlie Wagner & Christine Wagner Welch Founder Award for his contributions to Rochester sports. Last February, he became just the fifth coach in Section V Boys Basketball history to reach the 500-win milestone.

Arguably the greatest runner in IHS history, Candace won her third straight Section V Class A Cross Country championship and was third-team all-state last fall. She was named the Democrat and Chronicle’s All-Greater Rochester Runner of the Year for a third time (no other IHS runner has ever been selected for that honor). She was also 19th in the NYSPHSAA championships, 13th at the NYS Federation championships and 13th in a field of 150 at the Eastbay Footlocker Northeast Regionals.

Last indoor track season, she finished 11th in the state in the 3,000 meters. Her time (10:09.45) broke her own school record, ranked Top 10 in Section V history and was among the 50 best times in the country.

Candace has won nine Section V titles (seven individual) and been named AGR seven times (four cross country). She has won individual Section V championships indoors in the 1,000 & 3,000 meters and outdoors in the 1,500 & 3,000. She also was on 4x400 and 4x800 outdoor relay teams that won sectionals. Named Section V’s Devin Snyder Memorial Award winner for outstanding female track athlete last year (outdoor), Candace also owns school records in the 3,000 meters (indoor/outdoor) and as part of four relay teams. She won Monroe County championships in cross country (2021) and the 1,500 (indoors/2022). Candace was named the IHS Female Athlete of the Year in 2021.

Secretary of National Honor Society, she also has had her photography work recognized and Candace is the 2022 Yearbook editor. She has a 98.8 academic average and plans to run on scholarship at Boston University.

A 2019 inductee to the NYS Basketball Coaches Association Hall of Fame, coach Cardon has coached Irondequoit for 36 seasons. His 501 victories rank fifth all-time and make him Section V’s active wins leader. His teams have won three Section V titles, reached the finals eight times and semifinals 18 times. Coach Cardon’s crowning achievement happened in 2017 when the Eagles went 25-2 and won the New York State Public High School Class A state championship.

The Greece native taught physical education in the West Irondequoit CSD for more than three decades until retiring in 2016.
