Letter and Sound Recognition

Here are a few ways to reinforce letter and sound recognition at home.

Have a scavenger hunt.  When you are at home or out and about look for letters everywhere.  Look in magazines, newspapers, food labels, signs, menus, license plates and posters.  Choose one letter or find them all.  Can you say the beginning sound?  Can you think of a word that begins with that letter?  Can you use that word in a sentence?

Make a letter poster.  Place a letter at the top of a page.  Cut out or draw pictures of things that begin with that letter and paste them on the poster.  Make a page for each letter and make your own alphabet book.

Play Thumbs Up.  Say  three words.  When you hear a word that begins with a specific letter put your thumb up!

Play I Spy.  Look for objects that begin with a specific letter or find them all in order.  Player 1 says I Spy something with my magic eye that begins with the letter b.  The other player then tries to guess what is being observed.

Make a deck of alphabet cards using 3x5 cards.  Make one deck upper case letters and one deck lower case letters.  Now you can play Go Fish or Memory.

Read, read, read and read lots of books.
