FUN WITH READING
How do children learn to…
…talk
…walk
…ride a bike
…play with friends?
The answer is easy. Children
learn to talk and wanting to talk just like Mom, Dad, brothers, sisters, and
everyone they know. In other words in the early years, children learn because
- They want to learn.
- They have fun learning.
- They enjoy what they do (in the
process of learning).
- They want to be like others.
- They can see what the new
knowledge can do for them.
- They persist.
- They practice.
- They have people to support,
encourage and praise them.
- They make mistakes and learn
from them.
- They have expectations that
they will be successful learners.
Children learn about reading when parents…
- Make reading a book together an
enjoyable experience.
- Read loved stories again and
again.
- Make the reading memorable.
- Talk about books.
- Encourage children to join in
the favorite chants and rhymes and enjoy saying words together loudly,
softly, scarily!
- Discuss the story read.
- Ask children to predict or work
out what a story is going to be about.
- Ask children to work out the
words in a sentence.
- Talk about letters of the
alphabet as they appear and make meaning in a story.
- Talk about the make-up of books
themselves, and the conventions of sequence to be followed when reading.
- Let children play with books.
