Netiquette means being polite and using the golden rule while you are on the Internet, using e-mail or are in chat rooms. This means that you cannot use bad language, hog computer time, copy things that do not belong to you, or mess around with other people's files.

Never write in all upper case. Writing, "HI! HAVE A GOOD DAY" in your e-mail is received as shouting because it is all in upper case.

Emoticons (emotional icons) help people know how you are feeling. This is one :-)

RULES OF NETIQUETTE

  1. Always schedule your internet session in advance.

  2. Always respect other users and all computer equipment.

  3. Don't waste time.  Plan carefully and have key words spelled correctly before you begin your search.

  4. While on-line, stay focused on your assignment; only approved searches are allowed.

  5. Always give credit in your works cited (Bibliography) for any information you use.  Save this information as you are working.

  6. If you are having a problem, ask for help.

  7. Never give out personal information on the Internet, such as your full name, address of phone number.

  8. If something inappropriate appears on your screen, turn off the monitor and report it immediately.

  9. Never download software from the Internet, it may have a virus.

  10. Never eat or drink while using the computer.
