Internet Glossary

On this page, you will learn more about Internet terms, such as URL, search engine or browser.

Bookmark - saves your place on the Internet just like using a bookmark saves your place in a book. Use the Bookmark menu at the top of the page (click on it, and click on Add Bookmark). Ask Mrs. Mayer or Mrs. Semrau before using bookmarks on the library computers. Bookmarks which are no longer being used will be deleted.

Browser - a computer program that lets you look at the Internet. In school we use Netscape.

Download - move a file from another computer to yours. Always be careful to ask someone before you download. In library, you  may not download anything.

E-mail - allows users to send and receive messages over the internet.

Favorites - a list of favorite web sites (Internet Explorer).  Use the Favorite menu at the top of the page (click on it, and click on Add Favorite). Ask Mrs. Mayer or Mrs. Semrau before using favorites on the library computers. Favorites which are no longer being used will be deleted.

Flaming - use of offensive language on the internet.

Homepage - this is the page that is the first one for each Internet site. Sometimes a site has many pages and the Homepage is its introduction to the world. Our Homepage Is: www.westirondequoit.org

HTML - Hyper Text Markup Language - is the programming language of the World Wide Web.

Hyperlink - this is a blue, underlined word. When you move your mouse over this word, the arrow turns into a hand. If you click, you will go to another place on the Internet. Hyperlinks may also be under pictures (icons, graphics, or clip art).

Internet - a collection (network) of computers which are linked together and can communicate all around the world.

Internet Explorer - a popular Internet Web Browser.

Keywords - words you type into the search engine that help pinpoint exactly what you are looking for (such as "penguins habitat" to help you find out where penguins live).

Location Box - the white empty box at the top of your screen. In this box you can type an URL (Internet address), press Enter on your keyboard, and Netscape or Explorer will take you to that address.

Menu Bar - the line of words at the top of your screen such as File, Edit, View, Go, and  Bookmark or Favorites. Each of these words has a menu underneath which define their functions.

Netscape - a popular Internet Web Browser.

Network - Several computers connected together.

Search Engine - Internet program which helps you find information by using keywords. A good one for middle school students is Yahooligans.

Title bar - at the very top of the screen, the title of the page you are currently looking at is printed so you always know where you are on the Internet.

Toolbar - this is the bar of buttons at the top of the page that helps you  do things quickly:                                                                                                         

Back - go back one page Forward - go forward one  page Print - print a page
Home -go to the page where you started Reload - load the same page you are on right now Stop - stop loading a page (stop sign will change from red to gray)

 

URL - an address to somewhere on the Internet. It stands for Uniform Resource Locator.

Virus - a destructive computer program. These are very harmful and cause serious computer problems. Do not download files from other computers to ours at school.

Virtual - computer generated, not real.

Web Browser - Software program which allows you to explore the Web.  The most common browsers are Netscape and Internet Explorer.

World Wide Web - (WWW or Web) a part of the internet.  It has hyperlinks so you can easily move from one site to another.

 

If you hear or read a word you don't know and think it might be an Internet word, e-mail Mrs. Mayer and she will add it to the glossary.
