Consequences

While I have very high expectations that all students will do the right thing at all times, I do have a management system with consequences established for when one of our expectations/rules is broken.  These actions are progressive and are designed to accommodate the following goals:

-          Change the behavior of the student

-          Maintain the trust and respect of the students

-          Maintain the health, safety, and welfare of the students

-          Make each student responsible for their own behavior.

1st step:  Non-verbal cue

o            Eye-contact, touch, gesture, proximity) for minor disruptions

2nd step: Verbal Reminder

o    The student is asked to change a specific behavior and is redirected to the task he/she was working on.

3rd step:  Warning

o    If the 1st verbal warning was not successful, the teacher will attempt to redirect the student to his/her task once again, with a final verbal warning. Usually this is all that is needed to redirect someone who may have lost their focus.

4th step:  Behavior Action Plan

o    If the behavior has continued, the student will be asked to go to Quiet Study or come to my classroom for detention and reflect on the choices he/she made in class.

o    During this time the student will write a letter home explaining their actions.  This letter must be signed by a parent or guardian and returned to the teacher the next day.

5th step:  Conference with administrator and student

o    The final step involves the student being sent to Mrs. Ryan’s office for a one-on-one conference.

I believe more in working together towards positive things rather than focusing on negative things. Therefore, as the classroom teacher, positive praise and compliments are always given to recognize those students making appropriate choices.  As students learn to work together they will see rewards for their hard work through CARE leaves, CORE coupons, Good News cards, and the joy and learning in a caring environment!
