The third Student Summit on Race
was be held on November 18, 2016 at Greece Athena HS. Learn more about the summits at

Four Irondequoit High School students were asked to present at the Causewave breakfast on April 21, 2016 at the Rochester Riverside Convention Center. They spoke to an audience of over 500 people.

More than 180 students came together at IHS on January 8 for our first Student Summit on Race. The work begun by our young people that weekend will continue. To support these efforts, Dr. Makini Beck as written a proposal for the Unite Rochester Challenge.

Local schools explore change at Student Summit on Race

West Irondequoit will host students from the Gateway2Change project from St. Louis/Ferguson, Missouri at the first local Student Summit on Race.

Friday, January 8, 2016 / 8:30 a.m. - 2:30 p.m. 
Students from area school districts will work in groups exploring race, racism, privilege and internalized racism as they begin to deepen their understanding of race relations in Rochester.

What problems exist in Rochester? What solutions can we propose? How can we make the solutions happen? 


Saturday, January 9, 2016 / 9:00 a.m. – noon 
The community is invited to hear student presentations on their plans for change. There will be time for community conversations at the end of the morning.

Area school districts were invited to send 10 high school students to the summit. As of January 6, participating districts are:

Brockport Gates Chili Spencerport


East Irondequoit

Honeoye Falls-Lima

West Irondequoit

East Rochester




Rochester CSD
