  • Two Iroquois students will have works of art on display at the New York State Art Teachers Association 2008 Legislative Student Art Exhibit in the lobby of the Legislative Office Building in Albany from May 12-16, 2008. Erica Plukas and Christopher Bills are both sixth grade students of art teacher John Perry. 

     

    ·         Three West Irondequoit students participated in Science Congress at St. John Fisher College on Saturday, March 15.

    -Zachary Hardmeyer (grade 7) received a certificate of achievement for writing a science fiction story called The Truth.

    -Lucas Shadler (grade 7) won an honors award for his experiment entitled How Does the Force Affect the Velocity, Distance and Other    Factors of a Ball in Motion?  

    -Alex Walts (grade 9) won an honorable mention award for his project entitled Increasing Mileage by Decreasing Speed. Alex also presented his findings to staff at the high school on April 21. Watch for his presentation on Cable 12!

  • IHS senior swimmer Ricky Henahan set a state record in the 100-meter backstroke and won the 100-meter butterfly at the 18 and under Nationals in Atlanta. In addition, for the second year in a row, he has been named 2008 All-Greater Rochester Swimmer of the Year. Ricky will also be honored at the Rochester Press Radio Club Day of Champions as the Democrat and Chronicle Amateur Athlete of the Year on June 4.
  • Dake students Marnie Allen and Katherine Marren have birthdays just a week apart in March. This year they decided to have a joint birthday party and requested that their friends not bring traditional gifts, but that they consider making a small donation to the Josh Rojas Foundation. Their generous friends donated almost $800 to the foundation. Josh was a classmate of Marnie and Katherine’s; he passed away suddenly when the students were in fifth grade. The Josh Rojas Foundation provides support and resources for families who have suddenly lost a child, provides information regarding a congenital condition known as megalencephaly, provides monetary recognition to the youth of the community who have demonstrated excellence in art, academics, citizenship, sports and/or music and makes grants to public institutions that serve the youth of the community.

 

  • IHS students attended the Youth Workforce Innovations Conference at RIT on March 27, to learn about career opportunities that are growing in our region. Students were able to attend two sessions from the following topics: alternative energy, biotechnology, food marketing and agribusiness, hospitality and service management, information technology and imaging science/optics, and they learned what high school courses are important preparations for each field. Attendees were Julia Burns, Kelsey Corbishley, Claire Dyment, Steven Early, Lauren Goewey, Dave Hodge, Lisa Kaplan, Laura Kieliszak and Dan Kunkel. The experience was coordinated by Career Connections teacher Nancy Russ and the College and Career Center at IHS.
  • Four teams representing West Irondequoit competed in the New York State Odyssey Competition at SUNY Binghamton on Saturday, March 29, and each team gave an outstanding performance. The results are:

    -The Wonderful Muses (Rogers) finished in 3rd place.

    -The Wonderful Muses team (team (IHS) finished in 6th place.

    -The Eccentrics team (IHS) finished in 3rd place in a very close contest.

    -The Dinostories team (IHS) finished in 2nd place, which qualifies them to advance to the World Finals for their 3rd time in the past four years!

    The World Finals will be held at the University of Maryland, in Baltimore,    Maryland from May 31 through June 3.

  • IHS senior Kristen Bell received a $500 New York State Odyssey of the Mind Scholarship at the awards ceremony at the NYS competition in March. Kristen was one of three New York State scholarship recipients. Applicants were judged on their participation in Odyssey of the Mind and were asked to write an essay on the topic, "What does Odyssey of the Mind mean to me?

  • IHS Latin students played Certamen against other schools on Saturday, April 5th at Pittsford-Mendon High School.

-In the oral Certamen (contest), Justin Owen and Alex Dunn representing Latin level III won the First Place Trophy; this is the second time this year that IHS students brought home the level III trophy. Justin Owen also placed first in all four written competitions; Alex placed third in the written Pentathlon. 

-Laura Dolan won all four First Place ribbons in the written exams: Vocabulary, Mythology, Roman Civilization and the Pentathlon.

-Latin level II students competed for the first time; members of the level II team included Alena Leger, Aleni Sammler and Rachel Scudder.

-Laura Dolan has also been accepted to the Cornell University SummerSchool to take 6 credit hours of intensive Latin.

 

  • Students at Iroquois Middle School have written poems that will be included in the 2008 edition of the Young American Poetry Digest. The students wrote the poems on their own time and presented them to Mrs. Erin Greco and Mrs. Eileen Call who submitted them to the digest. Our young poets are:

  • For the eighth time in eleven years, IHS business students earned the honor of representing NYS in the 2008 LifeSmarts national competition April 12-15 in Minneapolis, MN. LifeSmarts (www.lifesmarts.org ) is a quiz-show style competition that tests students' knowledge on consumer-related issues. Team members were: Renee Roth, Jesse Leonardo, Steve Ross, Tyler Condello, and Samantha Jebbett. The team earned a respectable 11th place in this national competition.
