IRONDEQUOIT BUSINESS STUDENTS QUALIFY AS

NATIONAL FINALISTS

Irondequoit High School juniors, Tyler Condello and Sam Kennedy, finished 4th in the country out of 1,250 teams in 43 states to qualify to compete at the DECA International Career Development Conference (ICDC) in April for the Virtual Business Retail on-line simulation competition.

A four-week long competition had the two students working on pricing and store-front advertising strategies. Upon completing a full virtual year on the computer simulation program, they would upload their score to www.knowledgematters.com and see how they fared against students from all over the country. Students can improve their rankings by trying different business strategies to get better results and re-upload a new performance as many times they'd like over the four-week competition period.

By finishing in first or second place in the North Atlantic region of the country would qualify them to compete for the national title at the DECA ICDC in Atlanta in April. The Condello/Kennedy team finished first in the competition, which ended at 5pm on November 30th. Other Irondequoit business students who finished in the top ten in the region included the team Jesse Leonardo and Eric Oathout (seniors-8th place) and Megan Supple and Devin Williams (juniors - 9th place)

A separate on-line competition for DECA had students running a sports franchise. Ticket pricing strategies and stadium personnel decisions were part of this competition. First place for each of the four regions would have students qualify to compete in Atlanta.

Again the team of Kennedy/Condello finished extremely well, and nearly qualified to compete in nationals in this event as well by finishing in 2nd place in the North Atlantic region (11th in the country out of 725 teams). Other top ten Irondequoit business student finishers include Marc Lindsay and Matt Bain (seniors – 5th place) and Marcie Dineen and Jessica Tambe (sophomores – 10th place).

The second and final challenge for Retail and Sports begins January 7, 2008.  The same opportunities will exist then only focusing on using different business decisions.
