West Irondequoit Central School District

 

 

 

  • Once again, Irondequoit High School (IHS) has been named to Newsweek magazine’s list of America’s Best High Schools. At number 269, IHS ranks in the top 1% of the 27,000 schools surveyed. IHS has been on the list every year that it has been published and our participation in the Advanced Placement program continues to grow. More importantly, more than 70% of our students consistently score 3, 4 or 5 on AP exams, making them eligible for college credit.

 

  • Iroquois Middle School students participated in the Darien Lake Music Festival on May 22 and earned the following awards:

-Sixth grade students Emalee Fortunato and Hannah O'Neil received recognition as Outstanding Soloists

 -The Iroquois 5/6 Chorus won first place in their division and a rating of "Gold with Distinction."

 

  • West Irondequoit students won new bicycle helmets in the 2010 Wheel Sport Safety Awareness Coloring Contest. Our winners were:

  • George Theoharis, author of The School Leaders Our Children Deserve, visited classrooms at Rogers Middle School and Dake Junior High School in May.

Accompanied by Polly Patti, Assistant Superintendent from BOCES I, the visitation highlighted our inclusive and dynamic approach to teaching all students. Our visitors were able to see firsthand the professional culture which embraces diverse learners, as well as witness the success of students who have complex needs.  Dr. Theoharis commented that he consults and travels extensively, and noted the special culture and feeling of the classrooms, the success of the students, and the positive energy which faculty lends to the buildings.

 

  • IHS junior Jonathan Joy, has been selected for the Eastman Kodak High School Co-op program for 2010-2011. He will be working in a chemical engineering lab testing ink jet inks for future consumer printers. Jonathan begins right after July 4th and has the opportunity to work full time during the summer. He will also work Monday-Friday from 1-5 p.m. throughout his senior year.

 

  • On May 22, 2010, members of the IHS Philharmonic and Symphonic Orchestras traveled to Hershey, PA for a music festival.  The students received the highest score in their division with a rating of "superior."  Their trophy is currently on display in the main office at the high school.

 

  • Eight spring sports teams have qualified for the Scholar/Athlete Team Award in West Irondequoit. The teams and the qualifying players are:

  • The Irondequoit High School Amnesty International Club raised over $400 for Pennies for Peace at Arts Fest.  Club members (Anne Ritz, Samantha MacDonald, Emma Colley, Brittany Donofrio, Paige Smith, Trevor Bradshaw, Jackie Baker, Tyler Poquette, Annie Burkovich, Ms. Mohr & Ms. Scherer) sold daisies to raise awareness and funds for their cause.  They would like to thank everyone who contributed, especially:

                   -WIRQ for raising over $115 with T-shirt sales

                   -Lauren Mueller for donating $75 from her henna table

                   -Justin Owen for donating $40 in cookie profits

                   -Kelsey Corbishley for donating $15 from her balloon animal earnings

Amnesty Internationals grand total donation to ‘Pennies for Peace’ was $727.95!                    Almost $330 was collected in small coins demonstrating that even the smallest things, when used in force, can promote change. The organization uses donations to build schools in remote parts of Afghanistan and Pakistan.  

 

  • Also at Arts Fest 2010, Tri-M Music Honor Society sponsored a table where students could write "Thank You" notes to veterans who are alumni of IHS, staff at IHS and to family members.  Students wrote over 100 letters that were mailed to the veterans.

 

  • All 150 students enrolled in the Career & Financial Management classes participated in the Financial Literacy Certification program managed by the nonprofit organization Working In Support of Education (http://www.moneypower.org/wise/withframes.jsp).

 

Each year, the New York Financial Literacy Coalition gives a Financial Literacy Certification Test to high school students at participating member schools and those who pass the test are awarded a Financial Literacy Certificate indicating that he/she has met New York State Standards based on the Economics, the Enterprise System, and Finance curriculum.

  • The Eastern Monroe Career Center at BOCES 1 has announced the

  • IHS senior Cito (Chris) Culver was picked in the first round of the draft to play for the Yankees baseball organization.

 

  • Students in the E-Commerce Applications business class at IHS earned the Rookie Site of the Year award from ScoresUp.com. The class built a Web site, ITownConnect, to sell apparel and to share news about IHS.  Students mastered fundamental concepts of doing business, marketing, and entrepreneurship on the Internet as they developed an e-business plan and built and managed a live Web site with the objectives of attracting as many visitors and generating as much revenue as possible. “Their itownconnect.com Web site started strong with great research, brainstorming and planning and kept getting stronger, thanks to outstanding dedication and execution.”

 

  • IHS business teacher Lou DiCesare was recognized by Drexel University when he received the Harold W. Pote “Behind Every Graduate” Award.   Recipients of the award are nominated by Drexel seniors who recall the high school teacher who inspired them to pursue a college education, seek a new perspective on learning or pursue a particular major or career. In her nomination letter Abby Dineen IHS ’06, wrote, “For the first time in high school, I was fully engaged in class.  I loved going to my business education classes - I gave up lunch periods and study halls just so I could take more.  I showed up early to school just to lead DECA meetings, and stayed late to practice for the LifeSmarts competition.  I was pushed to reach a higher level of success in an entirely new field.” 

 

·         At the Athletic Awards reception on June 8, Chris Culver (basketball and baseball) and Mary Cushman (volleyball and track) were named Athletes of the Year.

      The “Maynard Hall Award” recognizes seniors for effort, desire, attitude and sportsmanship. This year’s recipients are:  Richard Looby and Mary Cushman.

 

·         Working with sculpture artists Mark and Diane Wiesbeck, IHS students created Student Body, a piece now on permanent display in the IHS library. Our students created the individual and unique ribs of the piece. It was assembled at Arts Fest to form one unified structure. A video of the unveiling will be available on our Web site soon. 

 

  • The IHS Jazz Ensemble performed at the Xerox Rochester International Jazz Festival on June 14.

 

  • Dake Art Club 2009-2010 members designed and collaboratively painted two murals that will be donated to Golisano Children’s Hospital and hung in a recreation room and a treatment room. The artists are: Jenna Dombroski, Kim Jebbett, Sarah Buckley, Mandy Freese, Mandy Lessard, Rachel Christianson, Michael Borg, Erica Nicholson, Madi Russel and Joanna Klemenz.
