Dear Parents,
Welcome to first grade! We had a wonderful first day of school. I am looking forward to becoming better acquainted with your child and you. The following information should be helpful to you and your first grader as we get started with this important year.
SNACK: Each morning we have a healthy snack. Your child may bring fruit, vegetables, cheese, crackers, popcorn, etc. Please, no candy, desserts, chocolate or drinks. Make sure that your child knows which food item in his/her lunch bag is intended for snack.
BOOK ORDERS: Periodically, I will send home book order forms. It is a nice way to build your child’s library at home. If you choose to order books, please send a check made out to the book company (i.e. Scholastic Books). We cannot send cash through the mail.
FOLDERS: Your child brought two folders to school. The first folder is to stay in his/her desk for keeping ongoing assignments and written work safe in one place. The second folder is your child’s “Take Home” folder. It is for all work, homework, and notes that we want to go home. Encourage your child to always place his/her papers in the folder. This second folder stays in your child’s backpack. If we work together your child will learn some important organizational skills and you will always find his/her papers.
MONTHLY CALENDAR: The first day of every month you will receive, from me, a calendar of events, special activities and an overview of the skills, concepts, and themes on which we are working (It should be found easily in your child’s Take home folder).
LIBRARY: The children have the opportunity to visit the Library every morning to return and/or check out books. This is part of their normal morning routine before instructional time begins.
SPECIAL CLASSES: First graders, follow a 6-day cycle known as letter days A, B, C, D, E, and S. On A, C, and E days we have Physical Education with Mrs. Martin. Children should wear sneakers on A, C, E days. On D and S days we have Music with Mr. Falco. On B days we have Art with Mrs. Landt and Library with Mrs. Forties and Mrs. Timby.
SCHOOL SUPPLIES: All school supplies should be in by Friday. If you need a supply list, send me a note. It is a tremendous help if you send pencils in already sharpened. First graders are responsible for keeping their supplies organized and in good shape. Periodically, school boxes are sent home on Friday when pencils and crayons have worn out or need replacement.
LUNCH: Lunch is at 12:10. Milk may be purchased for $.45 on a daily basis. The money is collected in the classroom, so exact change is needed. Please put the milk money in a labeled envelope/zip lock bag. The PTA runs pizza lunches on Fridays and ice cream days on Wednesdays. Information concerning cost and the start up date will be sent home from the PTSA. You’ll find this information in your child’s “Take Home” folder.
WEB SITE: As part of my on-going communication with you throughout the school year, I will be maintaining a classroom webpage. This will include our class calendar, first grade events, daily schedule and other helpful information. To visit the website, simply go to westirondequoit.org, click on “schools”, “Listwood” , and “Mrs. Wixson’s homepage.”
Please feel free to contact me if you ever have questions or concerns. To contact me you may send in a note, email me at Jamie_Wixson@westiron.monroe.edu, or call the office (336-1640). I have high expectations for all our first graders. It is important that we communicate. We are partners in your child’s education.

Sincerely,
Mrs. Wixson
**I will be sending home information on homework, Apple of Our Eye, and birthdays soon.
