a reward of money. He was given a command of a ship going to the West Indies. This was the small start to a big adventure.
First Voyage
Champlain left port from Spain (he had been sent to Spain for war) for his first voyage in 1589. He went to the West Indies, then Mexico, then stopped at Central America to explore. Champlain returned to his homeland, France in 1601.
Second Voyage
Samuel de Champlain left port from France to make his second voyage in the year of
1603. He then explored Canada as a geographer to find places for settlement and trading posts before returning to France.
Routes Taken:
Samuel de Champlain’s first trip began in 1589. He started in Spain on to the West Indies then to Mexico. His trip ended in Central America. His
second journey began in France, in 1603, and ended in Canada.
His third voyage started in France in 1604 and he headed back to Canada. He traveled down the Gulf of
St. Lawrence River to Nova Scotia. He continued exploring all the way down the Atlantic coast to Cape Cod. Then, he returned to France.
He traveled a fourth time in 1608 from France to Quebec. His final voyage began from Quebec down the St. Lawrence River into Lake Ontario. From there, to Lake Erie, then Lake Huron Huron and finally ending in the Georgian Bay.

Samuel de Champlain named Lake Champlain after himself. When Champlain was in his forties, he married 12 year old
Hélène Boullè in
1610.
