Yellow-Bellied Sapsucker

by Dylan

Did you know all birds have a lot of similarities and differences?  For instants all birds have three types of feathers.  There's the flight feathers that help them fly, contour feathers that give them their  color and shape.  Down feathers keep the bird warm.

The sapsucker is a great specimen .  The sapsucker will hit tree in a parallel formation until sap comes out.  The sap attracts insects which the sapsucker then eats.  It often returns to the same tree over and over again.

If you want to know how to recognize the sapsucker you have to look for a pale yellow belly and a red crown.  Its about 8-9 inches.  Its call is like a chirr or a weep weep.

If you want to find it, the best place to look is in the woodland areas.  They migrate south like any other bird.  They start to migrate when the sap freezes.

Then they make their nests.  They first drill a hole in a live tree.  Then they put woodchips in to it.  The egg is pure white because it does not need to blend in.

All birds have many similarities and differences from other birds.
