Osprey

by Alex

The amazing creatures we call birds are really cool creatures to study.  Birds have a great diversity of sizes, shape and color. At the same time anyone who studies these  vertebrates will see  that they have grate similarities.  Did you know all birds have 3 types of feathers.  They 're down feathers, flight feathers and contour feathers.  They also have 2 feet.

Some have webbed feet.  Birds of prey have talons . All birds have different of kinds of beaks.  The backyard birds such as the cardinal  has a coned beck for cracking nuts.  Birds of prey have curved beaks for ripping meat.  All bird have hard shelled eggs to protect them  from predators.  Some birds  have hallow bones the Ostrich and  Emus don't the osprey and  cardinal do.  Birds  have a lot  of similarities and some differences.

To me, the osprey or fish hawk is an incredible bird to learn about!  You can identify this bird by its markings - black spot under its wing near its elbow and its broad black cheek patch.  The osprey flies with a characteristic backward tilt of its wings . This bird is smaller and slimmer than the eagle and stands 2 feet high, weighs 3.5 pounds and has a wingspan of 6 feet.  Its call is a high pitched whistle.
