The  Great Blue  Heron

by  Robby

Do you know that all birds are smart?  They are, plus they lay hard shelled eggs.  They also have 2 legs, 2 feet and a beak or a bill.  All birds also have a very bad sense of taste and smell.  All birds have 3 different feathers, flight feathers, contour feathers and down feathers.  All birds have a backbone.

The Great Blue Heron is an exciting bird.    I shall tell you about it.

Did you know that the Great Blue Heron lives right in Rochester?  It has a gray overall color with a white head and a black spot over its eye.  The front of its neck is white with black stripes.  It also has a long, sharp, yellow beak.

The Great Blue Heron doesn't just live in Rochester, it also lives in all of North America by swamps, ditches, ponds, streams and lakes.

It is 4 feet tall and has a wing span of 6 feet.  It also has a wing beat of 30 beats per second.

The Great Blue Heron eats fish, turtles, frogs, snakes, crawfish and lizards.

It also eats  lots and lots of bugs we don't like. For example it eats moths.  Its nest is made of sticks and grass.  It lives in dead trees in swamps, ponds, and streams.

The Great Blue Heron lays up to 3 to 5 blue eggs.  They are ready to hatch in 28 days. It is 2 months until the young are ready to fly.

I hope you liked my heron report and maybe you could do the Great Blue Heron for your report.
