College and Careers With An Ecology/Environmental Science Focus

University of Rochester: Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences

The Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences offers five flexible degree programs to prepare you for a career in academia, government or industry. All our programs take you beyond textbooks and lecture halls.   You will gain experience in the application of scientific concepts to the real world through fieldwork, laboratory studies, seminars, independent studies, internships and guided research.

Rochester Institute of Technology: Environmental Management and Technology

RIT’s BS degree program in environmental management and technology prepares students to move the organizations in which they work toward a sustainable future. Activities range from simple tasks like keeping contaminated wastewater separated from clean water to determining how a product can be manufactured using less energy or without using toxic materials.

The most rewarding aspect of an environmental management and technology career is that students can start making a difference right away. There is so much that can be done at every level that graduate will feel good about their contributions from their first day on the job.

SUNY Brockport: Department of Environmental Science and Biology

The major provides a rigorous and broad-based interdisciplinary curriculum for highly motivated students.  The initial orientation to environmental science begins with two years of fundamental courses covering several disciplines ranging from environmental law to environmental chemistry.

The last two years provide an in-depth specialization in one of four areas of concentration: aquatic ecology, terrestrial ecology, earth sciences and environmental chemistry.  Aquatic ecology encompasses oceanography and Great Lakes’ issues, while student research in environmental chemistry and earth sciences considers “green-chemistry” alternatives, distribution and bioavailability of heavy metals in sewage sludge amended soils, and nutrient movement and recycling in watersheds.

Monroe Community College: Liberal Arts and Sciences

The courses in Natural Science provide the first two years of preparation for students who plan to transfer and earn the baccalaureate degree in biology, chemistry, environmental science, geosciences, physics or other career areas such as medicine or pharmacy, for which a good science preparation is needed.

Paul Smith’s College: Environmental Science

In the Natural Resources: Environmental Science program, (two and four year programs) you will learn to apply principals of scientific exploration to the assessment of human impact on the environment.  At the end of your studies, you will know how to use scientific method as the rational basis for determining the environmental health of an ecosystem. Your career path may lead to governments or industry postions or consulting opportunities as regulatory compliance or program specialists.

SUNY Environmental Science and Forestry: The Ranger School

The two-year curriculum educates students in forest and surveying technologies. The degree of associate in applied science (A.A.S.) in either forest technology or land surveying technology. Within the curriculum there are two areas of study: traditional forest technology and surveying.

Finger Lakes Community College: Environmental Studies

Finger Lakes Community College offers two year degree and one year certificate programs fields such as: environmental studies, fisheries technology, ornamental horticulture, and natural resources conservation.
