Welcome to English 9
Mrs. Russo
![]()
Dear 9th Grade Students and Parents,
Welcome to 9th Grade English! As we go through the year, we will be
exploring literature through the lens of several themes. The major themes include: Loss of Innocence, Creation, In Search of a
Hero, and
Seasons, Rituals and Patterns. The major
works of literature we will be studying include:
To Kill a Mockingbird
Inherit the Wind
Romeo and Juliet
The Odyssey
Of Mice and Men
Various myths, short stories and poems
Each work of literature will be studied through writing,
speaking and listening. In addition to
the major works of literature listed above, we will be exploring music, poetry
and pieces of non-fiction which enhance the themes of the 9th grade
year.
Students should expect to have homework between three and
five nights per week. This may
include: reading, vocabulary, and
writing assignments. There are ten to
twelve major writing assignments each year.
After each assignment is completed, graded, and re-assessed by the
student, it will be kept in the classroom in a student writing folder. This is in preparation for the final writing
portfolio at the end of the year. All
assignments are listed on a weekly homework board in the front of the
classroom; students should check this board each day. Finally, on the back of this letter, is a
list of classroom rules students must familiarize themselves with and be
prepared to follow as we go through the year.
Students and parents, please sign
and date the form below to indicate that you have read this letter. Feel free to add any information that would
be helpful for me to know about you that may help to ensure a successful
year. Also, I will be sending ongoing
emails to update parents on what we are studying in the classroom. Be sure to include your email address below
if you would like to receive this monthly correspondence.
Best wishes for success as you complete your first year of
high school; I look forward to working with you!
Mrs. Russo
