The following courses are currently included in the Irondequoit High School Curriculum |
DRAMA I |
| An introductory course intended to broaden a student's basic knowledge of theatre and the dramatic arts. This is a participatory course in which students learn and practice basic elements of acting including voice and movement training, and improvisation as a tool of acting and ensemble work. Students will be given performance opportunities through movement pieces, as well as scene and monologue showcases. Also included will be an overview of famous dramatic personalities, types of theatre, and theatre criticism. |
| For success in this course students should
have a creative spirit and a willingness to take and respect artistic
risks. 1 Unit of Credit. Prerequisite: None.

DRAMA II |
| A more intensive examination of theatre arts and acting that builds upon the foundation obtained through Drama I (or the appropriate equivalent). This course is intended to deepen the students' appreciation for theatre and acting. It examines character development, script analysis, audition preparation, and exploration of different methods of acting. Also included in this course is the study of theatre history and the Japanese tradition of "Bunraku" puppetry. As a participatory course, it requires the student to participate in several performances throughout the year, including a night of monologues, a night of student-directed one-acts, and participation in the Kids Project traveling student troupe of puppeteers. This troupe travels to local third grade classes to teach about disability awareness. |
| For success in this course students should
have a love of the performing arts, a willingness to risk, and the desire to
grow as an actor and member of an ensemble. 1 Unit of Credit. Prerequisite: Drama I or equivalent.

Actors in Studio |
| Scheduled on alternate days opposite the Script Writing class, this class is designed for the serious student of theatre who wants an in-depth and highly creative immersion in the theatrical process. It includes advanced scene study, directing techniques and opportunities, and examines the staging of original materials created by the script writing class. |
| The creative challenges of this course
will be significant, but so too will be the rewards. 1/2 Unit of Credit. Prerequisite: Drama II.

Script Writing |
| Scheduled on alternate days opposite the Actors in Studio class, it is intended to provide instruction and practice of creating original theatrical works. This course focuses on process: the process of generating an idea, the process of expanding, restructuring, and refining that id ea through an active exchange with actors and directors in rehearsal, and the process of evaluation through the presentation before an audience. Throughout the year, the class will be engaged frequently with the Actors in Studio, in order to facilitate that process. |
| The only prerequisite for this course is a
love of the written word, a crying desire to have one's voice heard, and the
daring to place it before the eyes of others. 1/2 Unit of Credit. Prerequisite: None. |
