The StoryThe story based on a novel by the 20th Century French existentialist, Jean-Paul Sartre, takes place in Paris, presumably during the Nazi occupation, but in this play, historical accuracy is not a priority. The play opens as the city tries desperately to hang on to its “gay Paris” spirit despite its predicament, but the mood is soon dashed by the arrival of militiamen who are on patrol, watching for any signs of trouble. As the militia exits, Pierre Dumaine, the leader of The League, a rag-tag band of resistance fighters, encounters Lucien Derjeu, a young lad of 18 who wants badly to be accepted into The League. Pierre insults Lucien whom the League regards with suspicion due to his alleged association with the militia. Humiliated, Lucien produces a gun and assassinates Pierre who dies in the street. Across town as Pierre lies dying, André Charlier, a man with high aspirations and an ego to match has married Eve, a young French aristocrat whom André has exploited for her inheritance. André is secretly poisoning Eve in order to take control of her estate. As Eve is dying, her villainous husband begins playing on the sympathies of Eve’s sister, Lucette, presumably to gain her trust in order for him to acquire her half of the family inheritance as well. The remainder of Act I takes place in a surreal world of the dead in which the Deceased mill around without purpose or fulfillment. They are able to speak freely to each other as they observe the living, but they can neither be seen nor heard by those of the living world. It is here that Pierre and Eve meet. They seem to be natural soul mates and bemoan the fact that they never met in the world of the living. From their vantage point they can observe Andre’s deceitful advances towards Lucette. Pierre also learns that the occupation forces have been aware of the League’s plans for an insurrection and are planning a counter attack which will all but certainly annihilate The League. At the end of Act I, Eve and Pierre are informed there has been a mistake, that they were not destined to die at this time and were, in fact, supposed to meet each other during their natural lifetimes. They are allowed to return to the living under one major condition: they must stay true to each other without distraction for twenty-four hours. If they can do this, they will be allowed to remain in the world of the living as lovers. However, if they cannot meet this stipulation, they must return forever to the world of the dead. In Act II, Pierre and Eve make a valiant effort to nurture their love, but their responsibilities outside their relationship weigh heavily upon them. Pierre is desperate to save the lives of his comrades who do not realize their imminent peril. Eve is equally desperate to save her sister, Lucette, from the evil clutches of André. With time running out, Pierre and Eve are faced with a final choice: will they sacrifice their love in an attempt to thwart a seemingly inevitable chain of events, or will they sacrifice the inevitable fates of their loved ones for a new life together? In short, can they choose their own destiny?
