A MESSAGE FROM MR. McCUE:

On Saturday, February 6th, IHS Student Council will host its annual Winter Dance at 7:30 p.m. in the gym. This event is eagerly anticipated by our students. IHS dances typically draw more than 700 students, a level of participation unheard-of at other area high schools. The vast majority of those students come to enjoy an evening of music, socializing and fun with their friends in a safe, well-supervised environment.

However, as is the case in high schools across the country, the "dancing" of some students has crossed the line into unacceptable and disrespectful behavior. Dancing that is obscene or sexually suggestive is not consistent with our community’s standards, and it will not be tolerated. A school dance is not a club or an MTV show; we must teach appropriate boundaries for our young adults that are consistent with our beliefs about mutual respect – and self-respect. As noted in the Student Handbook, "Students are expected to dance appropriately, and are subject to removal for inappropriate dancing."

Therefore, any student who engages in inappropriate dancing will be immediately removed from the dance. Their parents will be called, and they will be sent home. In addition, any student who is inappropriately dressed will not be admitted to this event. Students are being notified about this through school announcements and signs where dance tickets are sold; no further warnings will be given.

I am proud that the Student Council, which donates proceeds from its dances to charity, is taking a lead role in this effort through positive peer leadership and communication. They plan to enhance everyone’s experience by providing Dance Dance Revolution and other games and activities in the cafeteria, and will supply the dance DJ with a song playlist that includes a variety of line dances and other genres to promote appropriate dancing.

I encourage you to discuss our expectations with your child prior to the dance, to monitor how they’re dressed when they leave (including any clothes they bring in their bags), to know who they’re going to the dance with, and to give them a number where you can be reached that evening. This also applies to choices students make about alcohol and other drugs prior to a school event. Per West Irondequoit policy, a poor choice involving alcohol or other drugs results in up to 20 weeks' suspension from school - even on a first offense.

Consistent messages from home and school will help to ensure our teens’ health and safety.

Thank you.
