Apply computer applications to career and industry specific decisions.  Students will utilize computer applications to organize information, solve problems and make business functions efficient and effective. Interdisciplinary opportunities exist with art and technology.

 

Utilize advanced features of Word, PowerPoint, Access, Excel, and Publisher in the following industries: Fashion &, Entertainment (Travel, Event Planning, and Restaurant Management)

 


VIRTUAL BUSINESS MANAGEMENT

A growing segment of business is Electronic-Business both E-Commerce (Electronic Commerce) and B2B (Business to Business) Commerce. 

 

A business simulation software program ( www.knowledgematters.com ) will be used in this class to explore this area of growth in business. Using the simulation, students will manage a distribution center. Control over personnel selection, capital equipment purchases, and e-commerce systems, while dealing with international issues such as exchange rates are some of the components of business that will be explored.

 

As the semester progresses students will be asked to apply their learning in a true business environment. They will make business decisions in which they will see their results through profits or losses. Through the use of various technologies, students will manage a real business.


MULTIMEDIA APPLICATIONS

Provides an overview of multimedia, a relatively new field in which more traditional media (text, video, sound, graphics, photography, and animation) can be combined in a single media event using the computer. Aspects of authoring, design and production including technical hardware and software considerations will be covered. Discussions of the use of multimedia in training, education, marketing and entertainment will be included.  . The course will encourage hands-on participation and group learning as the students research the internet and peripherals.

 


CAREER & FINANCIAL MANAGEMENT

Grade(s):  9-12

This course is designed to provide the necessary day-to-day skills that students will need when they graduate and are living on their own and are working full-time.  These skills and traits include teamwork, ethics, interpersonal skills, and the use of credit, personal finances, taxes, insurance, benefits, unions, and retirement planning.

Any student interested in obtaining a five-unit sequence in Business or Technology in place of a LOTE requirement for an advaced designation on one’s Regent’s Diploma needs to successfully complete this course. A local final exam is administered at the end of the semester.


SPORTS MARKETING

One of the fastest growing career interests in Business is Sports Marketing. This industry is focused on using the latest research and marketing methods to help promote their product, but also identify new related products to increase overall revenue.

 

This course is designed to introduce the student to the role of marketing in the sports industry. There will be an emphasis on employing the basic marketing concepts and strategies as they apply to these two specific areas of study. Particular attention will be focused on the marketing of products and services through sports. Other areas that will be covered include: careers in sports marketing, marketing recreational sports, and legal issues for sports.

 

The course will utilize a problem solving approach through the use of case study and lecture. This course looks to study the basic standards of business ownership and marketing and apply them to the sports industry. Students will be assigned an I.H.S. Varsity Sport to develop marketing tactics to promote an assigned game/meet. Other assignments includes developing promotions for the Rochester Red Wings.

 

Guest speakers, Internet research and interdisciplinary opportunities with the athletic department are all a part of the course.

 


INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS

The globalization of business is moving at an incredible pace creating new systems strategies, practices and leaving in it’s wake many business people who are confused and at a disadvantage. Corporations and small businesses will engage in international business ventures.  And they expect the employees they hire to understand the practices and principles of international business.

 This course is taught in a computer lab with access to the Internet. The ability to access international information via the Internet and apply that information within the curriculum content is crucial.  Areas of study include Awareness, International Business Communication, Environment, Ethics, Finance, Management, Marketing, Import/Export, Balance of Trade and Organizational Structure.


COLLEGE ACCOUNTING

Duration/Credit: Full Year - 1 unit

Level:   Advanced                     

Prerequisite: None

The materials and content used to teach this course are patterned after similar courses taken the first year of college. Students will learn a wide variety of accounting principles including the accounting cycle, managerial accounting practices, and accounting procedures for sole proprietorships, partnerships, and corporations.

Students are expected to keep up with independent practice assignments, participate in classroom discussions, and prepare accounting journals and ledgers.  Computer applications will supplement unit topics when appropriate.

Evaluation of this course will be based on quizzes, tests, homework and a local final exam.
Six college credits may be earned with the successful completion of the College Level Examination Program (CLEP) test at the end of the year (fee required).



COLLEGE BUSINESS LAW                       
 

Grade(s): 11-12

Duration/Credit: Full Year - 1 unit

Level: Advanced

Prerequisite: None

Studying Business Law enables students to understand their legal rights and responsibilities as applied to contractual obligations, sales agreements, financial matters, buying and selling real estate, and general consumer issues.  Students will be introduced to the U.S. Legal system, court procedures, and jury processes as well.  Students will have exposure to community experts on wills, insurance, banking, and minors and contracts.

Students will be expected to engage in readings, and class discussions.  Evaluation will consist of unit/chapter exams, written class assignments and case studies, quizzes, law-related projects and a local final.  Business Law satisfies the New York State requirements as one (1) credit toward a social studies 5-credit sequence or an occupational education sequence.  The “CLEP” test in Business Law may also be taken as an opportunity to earn four college credits (fee required).


PERSONAL LAW

Students interested in careers involving law enforcement, criminal justice, corrections, political science or legal journalism should consider this elective.  Legal issues covered include the court system, trial procedures, civil law, torts, crimes, juvenile justice, family law, domestic violence, drugs laws, and incarceration.

The course is team-taught by community experts who bring credibility to the topics explored.  These experts include the Irondequoit Police Department, lawyers, judges, the Monroe County District Attorney’s office, and juvenile justice authorities.

Students actively engage in their own learning by competing in an in-class mock trial and orally debating legal issues.

The program is highlighted by field trips to the Hall of Justice and the Irondequoit Police department.


BANKING

Students interested in a career in finance, banking, accounting, or any field dealing with accurate business transactions should consider this independent study.  Individualized training, group seminars and work schedules are the foundations of this study.  You have the opportunity to work in an extremely important part of our economy while learning the intricacies of the banking industry.  Training will be provided by the staff of I.H.S. and members of Chase Manhattan Bank.


ENTREPRENEURSHIP

Students in this independent study will be responsible for the operation of the Campus Center Store.  Ordering, inventory, sales, record keeping, display and marketing are a part of this study.  Instruction is both personalized and in small group seminar.  Students will be placed in positions of trust and responsibility and allowed to manage their time in this program.

Students who are interested in a career of retailing, sales, marketing or commercial display will find that this is an area of study that provides practical experience that is interesting and valuable.


WORK STUDY PROGRAM & SEMINAR

Experiential education is an important part of a student’s academic experience. Students seeking to gain experience in a particular career area can join the Work Study Program.  Participation in the Work Study Program is required to receive credit.

Meeting at various times during the year, seminar encompasses many aspects of the world of work: career planning, job interviewing, work ethics, job performance, labor laws, conflict resolution, workplace cultural diversity, and sexual harassment.

Credit for the Work Study Program is awarded when the student has completed the Work Seminar and the required number of on-the-job hours in the Work Study Program (See Career Connections Program description)
