Second Grade News

Many exciting experiences await second-graders this spring!

This spring, students will read fiction, non-fiction and poetry about many different families.  We will be reading about a little girl’s birthday party gone wrong, multi-cultural traditions and one grandmother’s loving care of her family, to mention a few! As we enjoy literature, students are building skills in phonics and comprehension, as well as the ability to analyze the structure of words.

Poetry is creative!  Students have had the opportunity to investigate several different authors and types of poetry.  We noticed that poets use a lot of author’s craft when writing.  Next, we will become poets ourselves!  Students will learn how to create a number of different types of poetry including: rhyming, acrostic, sound, concrete, exaggeration, cinquain and many more.

Second graders have become true mathematicians, after exploring several different ways to add double digit numbers.  We continue our investigation of volume this month with an exciting lab using water displacement, i.e. Mr. Archimedes theory of water displacement.  This spring look for more subtraction fun, multiplication, division and fractions!

Watch out, plants are sprouting up everywhere at Brookview this spring!   We are learning about plant and animal lifecycles as we take on the role of farmers in the community.  Students will take responsibility to cultivate bean and pea plants with the end goal being to contribute food to family and community.  Don’t be surprised if your second grader wants to turn your yard into their very own garden!

Coming up later this spring we will continue our learning of community by looking into its economic structure.  We will research the different needs, wants, goods and services of the community and eventually work on creating our own business.  Students will learn first hand what it might be like to market, create, produce, advertise and sell an original product to the Brookview community.

Math Tip:  A simple deck of cards can be used to create addition or subtraction practice problems.  Make it fun!  Each player chooses two number cards and arranges them to make a double digit number.  Add or subtract the numbers and you will be amazed at your child’s ability!  Note: You will need scrap paper for this activity.
