First graders have begun a unit on Fairy Tales. They are learning to recognize the story elements and themes common to fairy tales. The students will use this knowledge to predict the format and outcome of these stories. They will compare and contrast different versions of both Red Riding Hood and Rumpelstiltskin.
Second graders have been listening to Animal Trickster Tales from around the world. In these humorous stories, the main character is an animal which plays tricks on the other characters. The students will learn to listen and think critically in order to decide if the tricks played by these tricksters are done for selfish reasons or for the benefit of others.
Third graders are involved in a unit on Historical Fiction. They are listening to excerpts from the book, Our Strange New Land: Elizabeth’s Diary. Jamestown, Virginia, 1609 by Patricia Hermes. The students are learning to recognize that historical fiction stories take place in a real time and place in history, have characters that behave in a realistic way for their time period, and include real and fictional events.
Students have also been learning to search for books by author, title or subject using OPAC (Online Public Access Catalog).
Kindergarteners come to the library every other day for a 20 minute story time. During that time, Mrs. Vogler, the library clerk, reads the children stories about favorite book characters or classroom-related themes.
All students are welcome to come to the library daily to check out books and magazines or to use the computers or other reference materials for research.
