Counselor's Corner

Colleen Graham, Elementary Counselor

Now that spring is here, we often think about the nice weather and the longer days.  It is a chance for all of us to get out and enjoy some fresh air and exercise.  It is also the start of the spring sports season for many children and their families.

It may also be a time for us to examine the amount of time our kids are devoting to video games, especially with those that contain violence.  Craig Anderson, psychologist at Iowa State University, found a connection between excessive use of video games and aggressive thoughts.  In addition, his research concluded that kids who repeatedly play violent video games become less helpful and social.

Some researchers point to the benefits of video game use.  Brain scans done by the Indiana University School of Medicine have actually shown that nonviolent video games produce activity in a region of the brain associated with self-control, focus, and planning.

After a full day of learning, all children need some “down time,” whether that is in the form of watching television, playing a few video games, or using the computer.  By creating a healthy balance of both indoor and outdoor activities, children will be more relaxed, socially competent, and happier overall.
