From clay suns to eye-catching prints, spring in the art room promises extreme creativity!  It is hard to believe that only a few projects remain between now and the end of the school year!

Our first grade artists have begun the Bodies In Motion project.  Movement, one of the principles of art, adds excitement to artwork by showing action and directing the viewer’s eye throughout the piece.  We will be focusing on drawing the human figure in various action poses.  Pattern will be added by repeating colors as we outline the figures.

The second graders are working on the Mood Sun project.  We built the suns out of clay using a variety of clay tools.  Pieces of clay were attached together using the score, slip and blend technique.  Each sun’s face portrays a specific mood.  Happy, grumpy, silly and surprised are just some of the emotions students chose.  After the clay suns are fired in the kiln, we will paint them with tempera paint.

Third grade art students have recently started Adinkra Prints.  Adinkra cloth is originally from Africa.  Printmaking tools and materials such as brayers, foam plates and printing ink will be new to most of us!  We will be designing our own symbols, carving them into the foam plate and printing onto paper in a repeating pattern.

As always, do not hesitate to contact me with any questions you may have about our art program. I can be reached at Brookview at 336-1630.
