Two 40 minute time sessions are required for part I and two 40 minute time sessions are required for part 2, the true length will be determined by how long it takes a student to become accustomed to Sibelius software.

Goals:
(curriculum and unit related; National or State standards)

This project will address NYS Standards 1, 2 and 3 (Creating, Performing, and Participating in the Arts, Knowing and Using Arts Materials and Resources Students will be knowledgeable about and make use of the materials and resources available for participation in the arts in various roles  and Responding to and Analyzing Works of Art).  This unit will also address the following Irondequoit High School Music Department outcome:

·         Creating music using Improvisation (Composition)

·         Knowing and Using Music Resoures (Using Electronic Instruments)

.

Objectives:
(measurable specific activities conducted by students)

Students will compose original music using both traditional staff paper and Sibelius music software.

Teacher Materials/Resources:
(specific materials the teacher must have to conduct the lesson, e.g. Romeo and Juliet (video), American flag, etc.)

None needed
or list necessary materials:

  • Sibelius music software
  • Music lab with a minimum of 8 student work stations

Student Materials/Resources:
(specific materials the students must have to complete the lesson, e.g. calculators, construction paper, finger paints, etc.)

None needed
or list necessary materials:

  • Staff paper
  • pencil
  • Access to student work stations
  • Composition Notebook (writing journal)

Procedures:

1.      After achieving a comfort level for very simple improvisation in classroom rehearsals, introduce “Composition1.doc” in small groups (sectional lesson groups are ideal) and guide students through steps provided in class.

2.      Once the the initial 8 measures are written and meet the requirements outlined, introduce “Sibelius Assignment.doc” and utilize music lab.

3.      After entering their 8 measure composition (the “A” section), students will be required to add another 8 measures to the original composition solely using the Sibelius program (using the same basic format/process of the first 8 measures).  This will complete the “B” section.

4.      Teach students the copy and paste tools to duplicate the first 8 measures and attach them to the end of the “B” section.  Encourage them to make subtle changes in musical elements to make this second “A” section slightly different from the first.

5.      Students will likely use some study/free time to complete entire project.

6.      Exemplars can be performed by the computer program for all students.

Assessment:

Students will be assessed using the rubric provided at the bottom of the Composition1.doc. Students will be asked to reflect on composition process in journal.

Special Comments:

This lesson plan does not need to be implemented in consecutive days and works well stretched out over a long period of time.  It also works well for students continuing year to year that are expanding their composition from a previous year.
