Brief Description:

students will practice math concepts (including facts) using a math computer software program (Math Arena) independently while noting progress on record card. Teachers are able to target specific areas of practice for students dependent on their needs.

One to two 45 minute sessions for introduction and practice (whole class). Ongoing after introduction for individual students; teacher can introduce one or two skill areas at a time and provide students a time frame to complete practice.

NYS Mathematic Standards: 1. Students use mathematical reasoning to analyze mathematical situations, make conjectures, gather evidence, and construct an argument. 2. Students use number sense and numeration to develop an understanding of the multiple uses of numbers in the real world, the use of numbers to communicate mathematically, and the use of numbers in the development of mathematical ideas. 3. Students use mathematical operations and relationships among them to understand mathematics. 4. Students use mathematical modeling/multiple representation to provide a means of presenting, interpreting, communicating, and connecting mathematical information and relationships.

Procedures:

1. Teacher will identify student needs, i.e. practice in addition and/or subtraction. 2. Introduce software to students, introduce specific skill area; allow students to practice. 3. Teacher will model and explain the use of “Record Card” to students. Have students practice. 4. Students will independently use their “Record Card” as they practice their skill. Suggestions: Determine amount of time for each skill ahead of time; skills can always spiral around. Establish a routine regarding cards, i.e. where to keep, when to hand in, for monitoring purposes. Have students practice in “training” mode; determine if students should work in “easy or hard” mode.
