Understand the meaning of operations (multipication). Write and solve multiplication problems using a variety of stratregies.

Students will demonstrate an understanding of multplication as a number of sets with the same number of objects in each set. Students will use a variety of strategies to compute the total number of objects in these sets.

Procedures:

1. Use the following problem or a similar one to illustrate a multiplication word problem. There are 6 frogs. Each frog has 2 eyes. How many eyes are there in all? 2. Use the STAMP feature in KidPix to stamp 6 frogs (see attached SAMPLE6X2.BMP) 3. Ask students how they could figure out how many eyes in all and discuss the different strategies. a. Count by ones 1,2,..3,4,...5,6,...7,8,...9,10,...11,12, b. Repeated addition 2+2+2+2+2+2=12 c. Skip count by 2's 2,4,6,8,10,12 4. Finally write the multiplicatoin number sentence 6 x 2 = 12 5. Use the STAMP feature with letters and numbers, or the TYPEWRITER feature to model the different strategies (see attached SAMPLE6X2.BMP) 6. Have students look for similar stamps to use (wheels on a truck, wings on a butterfly, fingers on a hand, etc.) or they can use the drawing tools to draw circles or squares and stamp objects into them. 7. Students may use the strategies that work best for them to calculate the total, but should write an equation and mathmatically show how they found the answer.

Assessment:

1. QUICK. Have studetns write the multiplication number sentences on the board. 2. PRESENTATION: Put student's projects in a KidPix SLIDESHOW feature. Have each student explain how they solved thier problem.
