Industrialization Unit

Objectives: Identify and explain the different impact(s) industrialization had on laborers, unions and the United States during the late 1800’s.

Answer the EQ: How did Industrialization impact labor in the United States?

 

Teacher Materials/Resources:
(specific materials the teacher must have to conduct the lesson, e.g. Romeo and Juliet (video), American flag, etc.)

Necessary materials:

Computers w/ Microsoft PowerPoint

Procedures:

Activity: Observe the following photographs and identify the different impacts industrialization had on labor. While viewing each photograph think about the following:

  • Who is doing the work?
  • What are the hazards?
  • What type of work are they doing?  Would they need training? (skilled vs. unskilled)
  • What was it like to live during this time period?

 

 

Assessment:

Students will take the information they just acquired and after looking at a few more pictures about the role of and need for unions in America can they answer the larger EQ:

EQ: What was the role of labor unions in trying to solve the problems of workers during industrialization and give your point of view of the helpfulness of unions during industrialization in making changes for workers?
