Technology Rich Lesson Plan

Name:

Troy Schlesing

Grade(s)

Grade 11 – Regents Chemistry

Information about the Lesson

Title:

Colligative Properties Online Lab

Brief Description:

Students use a laptop computer to access an internet site in order to investigate the concept of colligative properties.  The students will use the information that is gathered from this interactive site (a simulation) to calculate the effect that a solute has on a solvent in regards to boiling point and freezing point.

(time required to complete lesson, e.g. "two 45-minute sessions")

1 42-minute period

Goals:
(curriculum and unit related; National or State standards)

NYS Physical Setting Chemistry Standard 4

Performance Indicator 3.1qq

Objectives:
(measurable specific activities conducted by students)

Students will be able to predict how the addition of a nonvolatile solute will change the boiling point and freezing point of a solvent.  In addition, students will see that the greater the concentration of solute particles, the greater the effect on these properties.

Teacher Materials/Resources:
(specific materials the teacher must have to conduct the lesson, e.g. Romeo and Juliet (video), American flag, etc.)

None needed
or list necessary materials:
Colligative Properties Online Lab – teacher should develop a key prior to the lesson.

Student Materials/Resources:

Procedures:

Have each student access the internet using a computer and go to the designated web page that is given on the Colligative Properties Online Lab.  This web site is also linked to the West Irondequoit High School – Media Center Web Site (under chemistry sites).  The teacher should model the use of the web site to get the students started.  The students can work through the lab by following the directions and collecting the data as they go.

Assessment:

The Colligative Properties Online Lab is collected and graded to check for understanding of the effect that a solute has on the boiling point and freezing point of a solvent.  The concept of colligative properties will also be assessed on the solutions unit exam.
