Title:

Sky’s the Limit

Brief Description:

During the Biographies unit in Reader’s Workshop (after Theme 5 in the Houghton-Mifflin Grade 3 series), students will watch a 15 minute video about famous female aviators in history.  Before watching the video, they can be given the questions “Did any of these women face challenges on their paths to success? What challenges? What characteristics helped them to overcome the challenges?”  They can take notes during the video and then discuss their ideas in groups post-video and after reading “Brave Bessie Coleman: Pioneer Aviator” in their H-M book.  They can then record their responses in their Reading Response Logs.

Procedures:

  1. After introducing the Biographies unit, explain to the students that they will be learning about the lives of several famous female pilots.
  2. Show students the 3 questions to think about before playing the video:

                Did any of these women face challenges?

               What challenges?

               What characteristics helped them to overcome the challenges?”   

  1. Have students read, listen to or buddy read Brave Bessie Coleman: Pioneer Aviator in their Houghton-Mifflin books (After Them 5).
  2. Students can discuss answers to the three questions in discussion groups.
  3. Students can then write down their answers to the three questions in their Reading Response Journals.

 

Assessment:

Observation of discussion groups, as well as written performance in Reading Response Journals.
