Japan Kids’ Web site and Culture Mapping

Brief Description:

Students explore a kid-friendly Web site about Japan and take notes on a culture chart for idea circles.

After learning about the culture of Japan from the Web site “Kids Web Japan,” students will be able to answer the following focus questions in an idea circle/discussion group:

What are the key components of the Japanese culture?

How does education impact Japanese peoples’ lives?

How is the Japanese government organized?

 

Teacher Materials/Resources:

Procedures:

Session 1:

  1. Show the students the Web site called “Kids Web Japan” and model how to navigate through the site.
  2. Show the students the focus questions they will be discussing in the next session in idea circles.
  3. Model note-taking skills on the Blank Japanese Culture Web.
  4. Distribute the Blank Japanese Culture Web pages and charge students with taking notes, as they navigate the Web site and keep the focus questions in mind.

 

Session 2:

  1. Have the students bring their Japanese Culture Webs to their idea circle groups.
  2. Students should discuss their ideas about the three focus questions in their groups.
  3. Students can record their responses, post-discussion, in their social studies journals. 
  4. Discuss as a class. 

 

Assessment:

Observation of idea circle discussion groups as well as their Japanese Culture Webs and social studies journals.
