Grade 3 West Irondequoit Science Outcomes
“Life
Cycles of Organisms”
Compare
the life cycles of different organisms and analyze how life cycles affect the
survival of organisms (ESP Butterflies)
West Irondequoit Reading Comprehension Outcomes
“Determining
Importance”
As
students engage in the process of Determining Importance, they will generate
questions in relation to the purpose for comprehension and attend to
surprising and/or unexpected information determining the significance.
|
|
|
Objectives:
(measurable specific activities conducted by students)
|
The
students will learn how to independently use a FQR (Fact-Question-Response)
chart to deepen their understanding of non-fiction texts as they read
“Marvelous Monarchs” online.

Procedures:
|
- Explain to the class that
they will be learning a strategy for deepening their understanding of
non-fiction texts. This strategy
is making an FQR (Fact-Question-Response) chart.
- Model reading aloud the
beginning of any non-fiction article you have available. Doing a “think aloud,” model how you
might pull a fact you think is important from the text. Write down the fact on the chart.
- As you continue to read, do a
“think aloud” for a question you might ask yourself as you are reading
and for a response you might have.
Give the students sentence starter suggestions for responses,
such as “It’s surprising that…..” or “I think that……”
- Show the students the online
article at this web site: http://mdc.mo.gov/kids/out-in/2004/08/1.htm
. Demonstrate how to enlarge the
photographs detailing the different stages of the monarch life cycle.
- Give the students blank FQR
charts. Have them read the
article and record their facts, questions and responses. They can enlarge the photographs as
they read.
|
|
|
Assessment:
|
Assess
students understanding by collecting their FQR charts. By reading their charts, you will be able
to assess their depth of understanding of both how to use this reading
strategy and of the scientific content of the article.
