This lesson uses a powerpoint presentation to teach students to determine specific characteristic of clouds in order to identify which type of cloud they are observing in the sky.

Students will be able to identify whether a cloud is a cirrus, stratus, or cumulus cloud by recognizing the specific characteristics of the cloud. Students will be able to name the characteristics of a cirrus, stratus, and cumulus cloud.

Procedures:

1. Teacher will introduce the three types of clouds we will identify in the lesson: cirrus, stratus, and cumulus clouds. 2. The teacher will list these 3 types of clouds on the board or chart paper into three different columns. 3. The teacher will inform the students that there will be a class quiz at the end of the powerpoint presentation asking students to name specific characteristics and qualities of each type of cloud. 4. Teacher and students will walk through the powerpoint presentation calling on students for help reading. 5. At the end of the presentation, the teacher will "call sticks" asking the students to name specific characteristics for each type of cloud (stratus, cirrus, and cumulus). 6. When the chart is complete, students will compare and contrast the similarities and differences between the three types of clouds. 7. The teacher will then distribute printed copies of the powerpoint presentation to student pairs. (This is their packet). 8. When students are outside, the teacher will point out a cloud, asking students to use their packets to identify the cloud type. 9. The student response should be stated, but also supported with information that the students have within their packet. 10. With their partners, students will then be dismissed to identify the different cloud types they see. 11. Throughout the lesson, the teacher will monitor student observations requiring evidence to support their identification of the various clouds. 12. When students return from outdoors, the teacher will ask the students to independently complete a worksheet assessing their ability to identify the cloud types.
