Title:

Architecture In Clay

A Study of the Built Environment

Brief Description:

To compliment the fourth grade classroom social studies unit on the built environment, students will learn about architectural periods and characteristics that can be seen locally on their culminating field trip. Students will be viewing a slide show and creating their own building front out of clay.

Slide show viewing and vocabulary study will take two 45 minute classes. Completion of the entire unit will take six 45 minute classes.

Students will view the architecture slide show interactively by looking for architectural characteristics from each style listed in labeled slide. Each student will be assigned one vocabulary word to master and point out as it appears during the slide show. Students will also be responsible for including at least three features in their final clay piece. Students will keep a folder of terms and styles with in class detail labeling activities.

 

Teacher Materials/Resources:
(specific materials the teacher must have to conduct the lesson, e.g. Romeo and Juliet (video), American flag, etc.)

Architecture slide show, vocabulary cards (one per student), detail labeling sheets

 

Student Materials/Resources:
(specific materials the students must have to complete the lesson, e.g. calculators, construction paper, finger paints, etc.)

Procedures:

Students will view the architecture slide show interactively by looking for architectural characteristics from each style listed in labeled slide. Each student will be assigned one vocabulary word to master and point out as it appears during the slide show. Students will alsol be responsible for including at least three features in their final clay piece. Students will keep a folder of terms and styles with in class detail labeling activities.

 

Assessment:

Assessment will be ongoing throughout the unit. During the slide show students will be labeling the feature they are individually assigned. Labeled architecture detail sheets, and final clay piece will show evidence of terms and styles learned.
