Procedures:

Create and name a folder for each student to be stored on the K-3 drive on the network. All work can be saved there.

Spend time introducing the children to basic moves on the computer: saving, minimizing files, using fonts and inserting pictures.

Introduce Kidspiration: inserting pictures, typing in web circles, organizing information.

Introduce animal websites- we used senecaparkzoo.org., and Enchanted Learning.

Children  take notes on their animals; minimizing website when they have found information in order to add it to Kidspiration web. Pages are saved to files on the k-3 drive on the network. When the notes are complete, provide a copy for the child to take back to their desk.

When report has been written, children use Power Point to create a cover and a slide.

Teacher assembles slides to create a Power Point presentation on animals.

Assessment:

Children can be assessed on the quality of the information and writing in their reports, as well as their slide and cover.

Special Comments:

I also have copies of a CD that Nancy Murphy created with short videos of a number of animals.  Also, second grade went on a field trip to Seneca Park Zoo to directly observe their chosen animal.  CD’s are available through the technology office
