Title: |
Balancing Chemical
Equations |
|
Brief Description: |
Brief review of balancing
chemical equations. Positive reinforcement for the correct answer is an
interesting fact about a reactant or product. |
|
Subject(s) integration
|
|
|
(time required to complete
lesson, e.g. "two 45-minute sessions") |
Independent practice – may
be used completely independently, or in a more structured setting such as
a supplemental period of up to 45 minutes. |
|
|
Goals: (curriculum and unit related;
National or State standards) |
To
demonstrate increased understanding of the relation between balancing of
chemical equations and the Law of Conservation of
Matter. |
|
|
Objectives: (measurable specific activities
conducted by students) |
To
increase mastery of balancing chemical equations.

Procedures: |
Balance each of the 11
equations in Classic Chembalancer, 10 equations
in Review Chembalancer and 5 equations in Brain
Boggle Chembalancer. Click on “show diagram” to
actually see the number of each atom on each side of the equation. On
completion of the Chem Balancer equations go to
http://www.chemistry.ohio-state.edu/betha/chembal/shihome.html
and be a crime scene investigator to solve the
crime by balancing a series of chemical
equations! |
|
|
Assessment: |
Immediate feedback is an
interesting fact about one of the reactants or products in each
equation. |

Special
Comments: |
Students are often confused
by the difference between atoms and molecules, by clicking “ show
diagrams” students can better
visualize the actual atoms that make up each
molecule |
