Information about the Lesson 

Title:

Open House Presentation – “A Day in the Life of a Third Grader”

Brief Description:

This is a presentation for open house developed by students and the teacher to show parents what a day in the life of a third grader is like.  The power point presentation includes pictures of students going about their daily routines and activities.  It also includes written explanations to enhance parent understanding.

The time of the presentation may vary depending on how long you want to allot for each individual slide.  I suggest looping the slide show for the entire half hour of open house so that all parents have an opportunity to see the show.

This power point presentation is designed to show parents what a day in their child’s life is like at school.

 

 

 

 

Teacher Materials/Resources:
(specific materials the teacher must have to conduct the lesson, e.g. Romeo and Juliet (video), American flag, etc.)

Materials:

Ø      power point slide show

Ø      computer connection to television

 

Student Materials/Resources:
(specific materials the students must have to complete the lesson, e.g. calculators, construction paper, finger paints, etc.)

Materials:

Ø      digital camera

Ø      signs to indicate activities throughout the day

 

Procedures:

 

 

1.  Brainstorm daily activities and routines with students that they want to include in the slide show

2.  Instruct students on how to use the digital camera

3.  Have the students take pictures over the course of a few days of their peers and various activities (ex. turning in homework, calendar, specials, reading & writing workshop, lunch, recess, math, jobs at the end of the day, etc.)

4.  Put the slides in order and have the students brainstorm captions to go along with each slide

 

The presentation will be playing throughout the evening of open house.  The teacher and students can help answer any questions that parents, siblings, relatives, etc may have.

ü      Questions asked during open house

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Special Comments:

Using a power point slide show, combined with teacher and student discourse, enables the teacher to provide parents with an understanding of a third grader’s typical day in school.
