The United States becomes and Industrial Society (1865-1914)

 

Task: Create a Power Point Project that answers the six essential understandings of this unit, as well as provide pictures of your answers using actual photographs from Industrialization in the United States.

 

 Essential Understandings:

 

  1. How did changes in connections (transportation and communication) affect the industrial growth and expansion of the United States?

-        Railroads  - order by mail

  1. How did Industrialization change the American work place?

-        factories became larger         - more workers needed to run machines to increase production

-        machines replaced hand labor

-        dangerous working conditions

 

 

  1. What was the impact of corporations on American business and society?

-        Big Business grows because of capital

-        Abuses, Trusts, Monopolies - Standard Oil

-        Products improve American life

-        Workers not treated well by Big Business

-        Workers not paid well, barely enough to live on

-        Children had to work to help feed family

 

 

  1. How did new technology or new inventions improve life for Americans?

-light bulb –phonograph    -camera    -refridgerator

-typewriter –elevator      -electric power plant

 

  1. How the evils of Industrialization were linked to social reform and organized labor (unions)?

-        hazardous working conditions

-        child labor

-        strikes – Pullman –Homestead –Haymarket Riot

-        Triangle Factory Shirtwaist fire

 

  1. How did Industrialization have a positive and negative effect on America? (3 + and 3 - examples)

 

-Draw a conclusion- Industrialization was + or – because…

 

 

Steps:

A.    Decide as a group what your answers are to the questions. Use your textbook and websites provided to help you answer the questions.

B.    Assign roles to each group member.

C.    Use the websites provided to find photographs for your answer.

D.    Create a Power Point Project that includes the answer to the question and the photograph.

E.    Present your PP to the class.

* All students should have a voice in the answers to the questions. The content specialist will verify the answers are historically correct.
