1. Practice Article for NoteTakeing such as: Search-to-Teach Notetaking Practice Article - Girls Who Diet More Likely to Smoke, 2. Guidelines for Note taking - Search to teach packet 3. Notecard template on disk or computers.

Procedures:

Review guidelines for note taking with the students. Show the students the model notecard Read article from packet and underline key ideas Have students take out notecards or sit at a computer. Model filling out a notecard as students complete one with you. Teach those using word processed note card to print immediately following completion of each card. Have students independently complete a second card for that article Have students independently read from an electronic source and use cut/paste functions to complete word processed note card. Have students print note cards created.

Assessment:

Following day students will begin to work independently on their own topics and research during class time. Have them turn the 2nd notecard done that day in for checkpoint assessment. Reteach or offer support as evaluated by assessment.

This is not a modification for everyone, but for those students who have difficulty writing small enough to fit onto a notecard, difficulty with spelling, or writing legibly. They also can be saved to the students file number so that they do not lose their research. ** if saving to file make sure the students file and SAVE AS a different number each time they start a new card. ex. Notecard 1, Notecard 2. By saving at the beginning of starting a new card and then avoid the pitfalls of erasing their last card when in a time crunch at the end of the period. ** I require the students to print each card and save to their numbers.
