Goals:
(curriculum and unit related; National or State standards)

This class profile will provide a way for teachers to track reading progress of individual students as well as tracking class data from September to June in order to inform and differentiate instruction.  This supports the WICSD ELA goals and outcomes as well as the NY State Learning Standards for ELA.

Objectives:
(measurable specific activities conducted by students)

To document student growth overtime and identify learning techniques that have been successful and have helped students to progress in both reading and comprehension of the text.

Teacher Materials/Resources:
(specific materials the teacher must have to conduct the lesson, e.g. Romeo and Juliet (video), American flag, etc.)

Houghton Mifflin assessment materials (scoring sheets for each student at specific levels,  teacher’s guide to use for scoring), Microsoft Excel Program

Student Materials/Resources:
(specific materials the students must have to complete the lesson, e.g. calculators, construction paper, finger paints, etc.)

Individual books at the students’ level from the Houghton Mifflin Assessment kit.

Procedures:

Students are assessed at the beginning of the year, mid year and then at the end of the year.  Teachers will administer the word list assessment as per Houghton Mifflin training to determine the passage the child will begin at.  The passage is then administered individually to determine, reading rate, accuracy and comprehension.  Assessments are scored according to teacher’s guide.  Student names and scores are entered into the profile.  Levels are highlighted if the student scores at the independent level.

Assessment:

Through daily reading experiences, students will show improvement throughout the year.

Special Comments:

This has been very helpful in planning for guided groups, Chapter 1 Reviews, report cards, and conferences.
