Title:

Summer Vacation Science

 

Brief Description:

Students will choose one of their favorite summer activities and research the science behind it.

One 42 minute lesson to research and a couple of days for the students to complete the assignment on their own time.

Students will observe through research and inquiry how science is connected to, and can be used to explain their favorite activities.

-          computer lab (or wireless laptops with internet access) for student research

Procedures:

1.  Students will write a paragraph that describes their favorite activity in great detail.

2.  Students will write a second paragraph that links and clearly connects their favorite activity to scientific laws and concepts.

3.  Students will type their paragraphs and include a picture of the activity.

 

Assessment:

The student’s paragraphs will be assessed against the attached rubric.

I used this lesson as an introduction to the year.  It was followed by a mini unit called “what is science?”
