Procedures:

These lessons are designed to occur after the students have had instruction through Word Study or Reading Workshop on the short and/or long vowel patterns. The lessons can be conducted whole group and in differentiated groups.

Introduce the interactive web site starfall.com. The children will learn how to apply and practice their understanding of vowel patterns using the large variety of interactive practices on the site. These include phonetic games and reading text. The teacher may then organize the class into rotating groups of two on the computer (headphones are a necessity during independent practice). During reading workshop the children, in their differentiated groups, then apply what they practiced on the site using their phonetic readers and the whiteboards by practicing the same vowel patterns. It is differentiated because the children can be specifically assigned the targeted vowel patterns they need to master.

Assessment:

During Reader’s Workshop the teacher can directly observe and record student’s application of Phonetic strategies to reading. In Word Study the teacher can assess student learning through blind written sorts.

Special Comments:

The first graders each have the opportunity to teach a partner how to use the various practices on starfall.com and be the learning partner. This program lends itself well to peer tutoring. This web site is very user friendly for first graders. Once they have been taught how to use it they take off without needing teacher guidance.
