Students use bookmarked websites to get up-to-date weather data, and record the data on a chart for later analysis and graphing.

Major Understandings: -Weather describes the conditions of the atmosphere at a given location for a short period of time. -Weather is caused by the uneven heating of Earth's surface. -Air masses form when air remains nearly stationary and takes on the conditions from that location. -Weather conditions at a location are determined primarily by temperature, humidity, and pressure of air masses over that location. -High air pressure usually brings fair weather, low pressure brings cloudy, unstable conditions. -Air masses generally move west to east across the U.S.

Objectives:

The student will be able to track local weather patterns and forecast weather using accumulated data. The student will be able to use collected weather data to create a graph that shows change over time. The student will be able to analyze and explain patterns in the collected weather data in order to create a local forecast.

Procedures:

Students use websites and/or other sources to collect weather data (see chart) for 10-15 days. Data can be collected in class via bookmarked websites, or as homework. Students then analyze data to discover weather patterns and to forecast local weather (see weather question page). Then students use data to create a line graph of local temperatures over time (see line graph direction sheet).

Assessment:

The graph is used as the assessment. See attached "graph" grading sheet.
