West Irondequoit Central School District
NEWS FROM THE FOOD SERVICE OFFICE
Do you know about our Pre-paid Program?
The program is available at Irondequoit High School, Dake Junior High, and Rogers and Iroquois Middle Schools, all participants in the National School Lunch program. It’s a convenient way to provide your child with a well balanced lunch each and every day.
How does it work? The price of a lunch is $2.25. Simply determine how often your child purchases lunch and send in that amount of money. You may pay for as many days as you like and can send in additional funds at any time. We accept cash and checks made out to “West Irondequoit School Lunch”.
Where do I send the money? Place the check/cash in an envelope addressed “Attention: Kitchen Manager”. Your son/daughter can bring it either to the main office at school or to the cashier during lunch. You can also send it through the US Postal Service, to the address of the school, care of “Attention: Kitchen Manager”.
When can my child start receiving lunches? As soon as we have that check in the kitchen, it will be processed.
My child doesn’t buy everyday, and all children are occasionally absent. What happens then? The system we have keeps moving the lunch over until it is consumed. You won’t lose the money.
How will I know if my child is out of money? The cashiers do tell the students when their account is low. But by the time the child gets home, lunch at school is usually the farthest thing on his mind. We ask that you mark your calendar and check with your child from time to time. You can also call your child’s school and ask for the kitchen. My managers would be happy to give you that information.
How does my child receive their lunch? Students go through the regular lunch line and pick up their meal. At the cash register they give their name and their account is debited for that day. High school students use their ID number instead of their name.
What happens if there is money left on my child’s account at the end of the school year? That money moves with them, from grade to grade and building to building. When the child graduates, I will contact you and ask if there is a younger child in the family. If there is, we can put the leftover funds in the sibling’s account. If you do not have younger children, we ask that you let the account run out as the end of the school year approaches. It is extremely difficult for us to process refund checks.
What about snacks? Snacks may not be purchased on the Pre-Paid Program; they must be paid for in cash. The majority of parents want to know that the Pre-Paid Program is used for the balanced meal, not the extras.
Please consider pre-paying your child’s lunch this year. The program takes the frustration out of these common problems: “What do I pack for my child’s lunch?” “The only bill left in my wallet is a $20.00” “I was so busy getting ready for work, I forgot to give my child lunch money”. Of course, in these situations, the child is the one that is inconvenienced.
I look forward to working with you. Please contact me with any questions.
