Art Curriculum Guiding Principles

The visual art program will provide opportunities for students to:
Create and exhibit artwork of a variety media based on sequential grade 1-12 instruction within the classroom.
Create and view art that utilizes themes from personal experience, interdisciplinary learning, history, and society.
Develop a passion for life-long learning by utilizing learning extensions beyond the classroom.
Take creative risks, experiment, and problem-solve in their use of materials and techniques as well as to learn and use those with time-honored tradition.
Compare and select genre specific materials, techniques, processes, vocabulary, and appropriate tools for identified audiences and purposes.
Understand and apply the concepts surrounding the Elements of Art and the Principles of Design to be utilized during the creative process.
Compare verbally and in writing, the ways in which a variety of ideas, themes, and concepts are manifested in other disciplines and expressed through the visual arts.
Use the critique process, read, write, and discuss aesthetics of student and professional works through the ages to enhance vocabulary, skills, and concepts taught in the classroom.
Create a forum for personal expression that builds respect for differing viewpoints and cultural values, thereby providing a means of developing awareness of current issues and initiating societal change.
Research and reflect upon the interdisciplinary connections that are manifested in the artifacts, ideas, beliefs, histories, values, and events of differing cultures.
Use electronic multimedia and technology to express visual and conceptual ideas as artistic creations.
Explore current artistic vocations and avocations as well as how they influence everyday life.
